Four lawyers from ABCJ delivered a presentation at the 26th UNAFEI UNCAC Training Programme.
On October 31, 2024, at the 26th UNAFEI UNCAC Training held at the International Legal and Justice Center (Akishima-City, TOKYO), ABCJ Committee members—Lawyers Tatsuya INAGAWA, Kengo NISHIGAKI, Ayumi FUKUHARA, and Nobuhiro MATSUO—delivered a presentation and joined discussions with participants on the topic, “Anti-Corruption Initiatives in Japanese Companies and the Significant Role of Lawyers.”
This training program, conducted by UNAFEI (the United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders), which operates within the Research and Training Institute of the Ministry of Justice, has been held for over 25 years and is implemented with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) inviting participants from Japan and various international areas. This year, with a focus on public-private collaboration in anti-corruption efforts, 29 participants from 21 countries attended, and the program will continue until November 19, 2024.
In addition to introducing ABCJ, the presentation covered a range of subtopics, including an overview of lawyers' involvement in Japanese companies' anti-corruption efforts, lawyers' role in combating corruption in critical situations, the utilization of plea-bargaining system in Japan and the features of foreign bribery cases. The presentation was structured as a relay-style session, with each of the four lawyers contributing from their unique backgrounds. After the presentation, questions from the participants continued unabated, reflecting their strong interest in the extensive role Japanese lawyers play in anti-corruption efforts, transcending differences in legal systems. This led to a highly engaging and passionate session. We sincerely hope that this presentation will contribute, in its own modest way, to establishing the rule of law in each participant's country.
